Objective
Students will be able to:
• identify the stages of the development of interpreting as a profession and define the statutory basis of interpreting services
• identify interpreting service systems and key legislation relating to the status of various customer groups
• name and describe research approaches to interpreting and define the forms and methods of translation and interpreting by using appropriate terminology
• describe the main points of intralingual translation and interpreting process
• grasp and reformulate key points in interaction situations and from text
• demonstrate a command of the basics of guidance and description
• describe the diversity of customer groups with different types of communication methods.
Content
Students will be introduced to the concepts and specific pieces of primary and secondary legislation governing interpreting services. The weighting of contents varies slightly depending on the choice of Profile 1 or Profile 2. Students acquire knowledge and understanding of the causes of hearing and vision impairment and of the effects of dual sensory impairment, the causes and effects of hearing impairment/hearing loss, vision and assistive vision tools, and hearing and assistive hearing tools. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate broad-based knowledge of the interpreting service system.
