Objective
Students will be able to:
• describe and analyse the diversity of the sign language community from the socio-linguistic perspective
• describe the variation of language repertoires in sign language interaction
• identify the needs, goals and expectations of interaction parties and confidently adapt their interpreting expression accordingly
• identify and describe the status of sign languages in different countries
• demonstrate a reasonable ability to express themselves in multilingual and/or international sign language situations
• analyse the role of interpreters as users and learners of sign language and members of the sign language community
• achieve CEFR Level B2 and partly C1 proficiency in Finnish Sign Language.
Content
Students advance their knowledge of the situational variation of language. At the end of the course, students produce a Finnish Sign Language version of their thesis abstract. Studying in a sign language environment is given emphasis.
