Objective

Students
- can describe the variation of signed language forms related to situations and language users
- can evaluate the factors related to language use situations and their influence in interpreting
- can analyze interpreters’ work and discuss the interpreting work and duties from the perspective of professional ethics
- can analyze power relations and exercise of power in interpreted interaction situations
- can name factors that contribute to the success and failure of interpreting
- can reflect on their own attitudes and role as interpreters
- can take care of their workplace well-being.

Content

Content
- Practical training (incl. goal setting, planning, performing, reporting & debriefing/presenting/seminar)
- Analyzing different sets of interpreting assignments
- Interpreter’s duties and work environments
- Power relations, exercise of power in interpreted interaction situations
- Observing the variation of language forms related to situations and language users (e.g. signed speech, tactile signing and signing for persons with limited visual field)
- Reflection, professional ethics & workplace well-being
- Workshop week
- Interpreting proficiency exam

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Opintojakso on hylätty, jos opiskelija
• ei osoita saavuttaneensa opintojakson tavoitteet
• ei ole osallistunut harjoitteluiden ohjaus- ja purkutunneille
• ei ole suorittanut harjoitteluita ja kaikkia niihin liittyviä tehtäviä (lueteltu kohdassa hyväksytty) hyväksytysti.

Further information

Level: learner

The course is a practical training period. The training is carried out in e.g. an enterprise producing interpreting services, with a so-called mentor interpreter, in a theatre interpreting production, or under the supervision of interpreters working for different communities.
