Interpreting: Practical training 2 (5cr)

This course is a practical training period. It is carried out in e.g. an enterprise producing interpreting services, with a so-called mentor interpreter, in a theatre interpreting production, or under the supervision of interpreters working for different communities.

As the proficiency exam, students take the final exam in sign language interpreting, where the environment/context is social work and/or health care. The exam consists of the following parts:
- Interpreting a dialogue & self-assessment (assessed 0-5)
- Interpreting a monologue (source language FinSL) & self-assessment (assessed 0-5)
- Interpreting a monologue (target language FinSL) & self-assessment (assessed 0-5)
- Ethical reflection (assessed Pass/Fail)

In the monologues, the other language is primarily Finnish. With deaf students, it can be something else, such as International Sign or easy-to-understand sign language. According to the requirements set by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) and the general practice, working as a professional interpreter requires that the student receives at least grade 3 for each numerically assessed part of the exam (assessed 0-5) and passes the ethical reflection part of the exam.
