Objective

Students
- develop further their technical skills and acquire deeper knowledge in variety of environments
- practise instructing outdoor activities that match their skill level and choosing appropriate learning environment
- demonstrate understanding and comprehension of essential safety procedures and recognition of risk factors
- practise to plan and produce outdoor activities with a goal-oriented approach

Content

Students further develop their skills in chosen methods of adventure education and chosen learning environments. Students learn to observe and consider activity-specific technical viewpoints in managing and instructing outdoor activities. Students utilize their skills and knowledge in appropriate environments and gain experiences of managing physical, social and psychological safety. Students gain experience of and further develop their skills in planning and producing activities with educational goals.

Qualifications

Prerequisite:
• Students have to possess sufficient mental and physical health and functional capacity. Students have to be able to function in various social situations and multicultural groups and to participate in multiday expeditions including several activities, such as hiking, biking and camping. Students have to act in a responsible way and promote safety.
• Logbook: 25 hours paddling
• Completed: Outdoor skills in adventure education 10 ECTS
• EPP1 paddling techniques

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1:
The student
- shows poor motivation and attitude
- the student has severe challenges to complete given tasks without a lot of support
- absence has severe negative effects on learning
- cannot complete given tasks
- behavior has a significant distractive effect on group performance

2:
The student
- needs a lot of support
- absence has negative effect on learning
- The given tasks are uncompleted or need a lot of support to complete
- behavior is unsupportive for the group performance

Assessment criteria, good (3)

3:
The student
- is able to work independently
- the student improves skills and knowledge
- performs well as a group member, but is not able to promote group performance

4:
The student
- is able to work independently
- promotes the group performance or performs as a good example of good skills and knowledge for the group

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
- is able to work independently
- promotes the group performance in an excellent way
- performs as a good example of skills and knowledge for the group

Assessment is based on:
- ability to learn and perform technical skills
- active participation and motivation: designated leadership, self-leadership, active followership, ability to support the group

During the kayaking expedition, nature and wilderness setting is the learning environment. Students will sleep in tents and cook meals together with camping stoves. Experiences are reflected by lecturers, small groups and individually.
