Objective

After completing the course, the student will: know the most important concepts of ethnicity research and approaches to ethnopolitics research be familiar with the historical developments in Finnish ethnopolitics underlying the current policy of multiculturalism and the reasons for the changes understand why and how ethnicity and culture are becoming important objects of governance be able to present analytical argumentation in debates on minorities and immigration. 

Content

The course covers the history of Finnish ethnopolitics, i.e. of how ethnic minorities were governed, from the first provisions related to the Roma and Sami peoples to contemporary integration policy and its challenges. The course also covers the concepts, approaches, and methodology of ethnopolitics research.
