Objective

• understand the key perspectives of the theoretical frame of reference of experiential education and learning and adventure education
• examine current discussions and research on experiential learning and adventure education
• demonstrate knowledge of the practical and theoretical aspects of experiential learning and adventure education
• critically evaluate the potential, relevance, and applicability of experiential learning and adventure education in different professional fields, environments, and communities
• reflect on developing expertise in the context of experiential learning and adventure education

Content

• the history, philosophy, traditions, and essential theoretical concepts of experiential education and learning and adventure education
• the rationale, principles and processes of instruction
• current discussions and research

Teaching methods

Online course including webinars, individual and group assignments, a learning diary, and independent studying. Attending the webinars is strongly recommended.

Further information

Experiential learning and society 5 ECTS aims to increase the understanding of the theoretical framework of experiential learning and experiential and adventure education as well as their practical starting points and principles. The course focuses on current discussions and research, and the relevance, meaning and opportunities of experiential learning and adventure education. The participants of the course explore the relevance of experiential learning and adventure education in contemporary societies.

The online course will be organized in English which enables an international learning environment. The participants should be willing to listen, read, write and speak English.

The course is well-suited for students and professionals in youth work, NGO work, education and schooling, rehabilitation, social work, and sports and physical education who wish to strengthen their theoretical and research and development competence in experiential learning and adventure education.

The master's level course don’t require a community educator degree or studies of adventure education, even though this background might prove useful. A bachelor’s degree from one of the aforementioned fields is recommended but not obligatory.

Note: This master's level (EQF 7) course equals 5 ECTS (1 ECTS credit point equals about 27 study hours).
