Content

Academic literacy skills
-the principles of academic writing and reading
-information retrieval, utilizing sources, evaluation of information (source criticism), argumentation
-critical thinking, problem solving skills, multiliteracy

-functional, professional written communication: communication plan, media release, email communication, intra, social media communication

Materials

Course materials include readings, articles, blogs, videos and podcasts. These course materials can be found on the course platform in Hoodle.

Teaching methods

Professional Literacy is a self-paced online course. We explore multiliteracy, search skills and academic literacy through reading, writing, discussions and interactive tasks.
The course includes four (4) optional webinars. These webinars are a chance for us to discuss the topics and ideas raised in the course. Webinar notes will be posted on Hoodle after each session.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student partially recognizes the importance of multiliteracy and is familiar with some texts as well as some of their usage contexts.

The student satisfactorily identifies reliable sources of information but requires practice in utilizing them. They have some knowledge of the principles of academic writing and reading. However, their application in the student's own activities is uncertain or seriously deficient.

The student adequately recognizes workplace text types and can tailor their own written communication to some audiences. They have skills in using some reading and writing strategies as well as producing texts in digital environments.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student comprehends the significance of multiliteracy and excels in evaluating various texts as well as their usage contexts.

The student identifies reliable sources of information and adeptly utilizes them critically and ethically. They have a profound understanding of the principles of academic writing and reading and seamlessly apply them in their own activities.

The student adeptly recognizes various workplace text types and skillfully directs their written communication to diverse audiences in an expert manner. They possess outstanding capabilities in employing various reading and writing strategies and producing and evaluating various texts in digital environments.
