Objective
Students
-Conceptualize community educators’ different work fields and duties (NGO and youth work, adventure education and workplace community development).
-Are familiar with community educators’ conceptual framework and value basis.
-Understand the core competencies of the degree programme in community education.
-Familiarize themselves with the basics, development and the present state of NGO and youth work, adventure education and workplace community development.

Teaching methods
6 days of face-to-face teaching on Helsinki campus on the following topics: identity, ethics and core competencies of a community educator, conceptualisation of different fields of work and tasks of community educators (NGO and youth work, adventure education and workplace community development). The topics covered in the face-to-face course will be explored through course assignments.

Student workload
The overall course is 10 Ects. Course is divided into five sections, each 2 ects.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
To pass the course the student must:
-The student mus thave independently completed the sections: Introduction to Youth Work, Introduction to NGO Work, Introduction to Adventure and Outdoor Education and Introduction to the Workplace Community Development
-The student has attended a face-to-face study sessions
-The student has completed the course on time

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the core competencies of the degree programme in Community Education
- Can define the starting points of NGO and youth work, adventure and outdoor education and workplace community development
- Understand the foundations, development and the current status of NGO and youth work, adventure education and workplace community development.
- Outline the areas of work and responsibilities of a community educator
The course will be evaluated within one month of the end of the course.
To pass the course the student must:
- have independently completed the sections: Introduction to Youth Work, Introduction to NGO Work, Introduction to Adventure and Outdoor Education and Introduction to the Workplace Community Development
- has attended a face-to-face study sessions
